Physiology and biochemistry underpin the science of nutritional therapy. Completing our homestudy foundation courses in Human Biology and Chemistry (or equivalents) will enable access on to the degree course for students without equivalent qualifications in these subjects. Many students successfully complete our foundation studies every year prior to entrance.
Our Foundation Courses in Human Biology and Chemistry are set at Access level. This means that the content of the courses assumes no knowledge of the subjects to start with and gradually takes you through the concepts that are important to understand in order to join a degree programme in nutritional therapy. Both courses should be acceptable for entrance on to most other programmes in health sciences.
Both Foundation Courses are entirely home study with tutor support. Twice a year we run an optional 6 day taught intensive for the Chemistry Foundation as a back-up to the home study programme at no extra cost. You will automatically receive a recording of the previous 6 day taught chemistry on CD with your homestudy materials.
Many of our applicants are professionals seeking a new career or mothers looking toward returning to work in a way that fits in with family life. If your current background like many of our students was in the arts, business, law or finance then it is quite likely that you will need to complete both foundation courses.
If this is the first time that you are considering an academic course of study and feel a bit daunted by science or doubt whether you can achieve the level required for a health science degree then this could be a good way for you to become acquainted with scientific concepts in a gradual manner, at your own pace.
Both foundation courses are coursework assessed enabling you to consolidate without the pressure of examinations the fundamentals that underpin nutritional therapy. The sciences will be examined on the undergraduate degree so spending the time on understanding the fundamentals rather than revision is more helpful.
If your background is in nursing or complementary therapies then you might need to complete our Chemistry foundation course. Whereas it is more likely that you will need to complete our biology foundation course if your background is in engineering or food science.
If you have studied to GCSE in either subject over the last five years then you may be entitled to specific exemptions from both courses. Our foundation courses are also accessible as a Refresher Course.
We do accept other foundation science courses subject to them meeting the same standard.
There are opportunities to start the degree course whilst completing foundation studies.
