'On the Pulse' Nutritional therapy Student Clinic

You can register to participate in our 'free of charge' supervised student nutritional therapy clinic. There are opportunities for consultations throughout the year. We cannot guarantee that you will be offered a consultation. All consultations are supervised by a qualified nutritional therapist registered with BANT.

Year One Clinic

At the end of the first year our students work one-to-one with a client providing a Dietary Analyst's Consultation. This involves keeping a food diary for four days and a student will analyse your diet and prepare a substantial Report informing you how you can use food to maximise your nutritional intake. You will then be invited to come to the Centre of one hour and the student will explain the most significant findings from the analysis of your diet. First year students focus on promoting health and preventing illness. In order to participate in the first year clinic it is important that you do not have a major illness or take prescription medicines for illnesses. If you have a number of irksome symptoms like fatigue, mood swings, irritability, flatulence, bloating etc that you think might be helped by diet then you are the person that our first year students are ready to help. Most year one clinics take place in November and December. However, there are some opportunities throughout the year.

Year Two Clinic

In September every year our second year students work in twos and threes with a client as a Care Group. You will be asked to complete a comprehensive health check questionnaire and return in advance of the consultation. Allow 2.5 hours for the consultation. A student will take your health history during the first hour. You will then be given a break for up to 30 minutes and offered refreshment. During this time the Care Group discusses your health history with their supervisor. You will then be invited back into the consultation and another student will discuss with you how nutritional therapy might be used to address your current health problems. This will include rationales for laboratory tests and dietary changes. Following through with laboratory tests would likely incur costs unless they are tests that could be performed by your GP. Tests are optional. However, it is important at this stage of the student training that they have the opportunity to discuss laboratory investigations with clients. The third part of the consultation will be to negotiate with you how you wish to proceed with the recommendations. You should leave with a dietary plan or this will be forwarded to you in the post a few days later. If you undertake tests then a qualified nutritional therapist at the Centre will offer you a further free consultation to explain the results to you and adjust recommendations based on the findings. This would include nutritional supplementation if indicated.

In November and December every year second year students repeat the above but on a one to one basis with a supervisor. At this stage of their training second year students are also able to make considerations for nutritional supplementation as well as dietary changes. You can register for both the June and November/December clinics for nutritional support to help address symptoms or illnesses.

Year Three Clinic

During the third year students see another four clients and need to follow through with these clients by offering a return visit. If you registered for the November/December second year clinic then the student would be able to offer you a return visit at the beginning of their third year which starts in January each year.

From July onwards third year students see clients in their own area. These consultations are audio or video recorded and sent to the Centre for approval before giving you the go-ahead to implement the programme. This enables our end of third year students to experience a level of independent practice before qualification. Many of our students live around the UK and abroad so there could be opportunities to register for a third year clinic with a student that lives near you. We encourage students to offer one telephone consultation during their third year as this will arise in their professional practice. Therefore, wherever you live there could be an opportunity for a consultation. Telephone consultations take place through Skype with a supervisor.
